Notes on The Universal Card:

The specific conditions and procedure for this effect were set forth by Karl Fulves in the Winter Folio of the Pallbearers Review (1967) in an effect called, "By Any Other Name". The specific conditions set forth by Fulves are:

1. A single card from a deck is introduced, remains face-down and is called a "universal card". Fulves writes: "... each pack contains a "universal card", one capable of assuming the appearance of any other card.

2. Three cards are chosen from a different colored deck by three spectators. in other words, if the "universal card" is red-backed, the spectators choose cards from a blue deck.

3. The "universal card" sequentially changes into a duplicate of each selection. This constitutes three changes.

4. For a finale, the "universal card" is shown blank, which creates a fourth and final change.
